The Peoples of Gor'tharak

Characters

Everyone has reasons. Some of those reasons will break your heart.

The Alliance Builders
Grukk Ironjaw
Orc

Grukk Ironjaw

Warrior-Diplomat, Co-founder of the Unseen Alliance

Build something, boy. Don't just hold the line.

Appearance

Six and a half feet tall with deep grey-green skin. His left tusk is capped with iron — giving him the name Ironjaw. Amber eyes that look like they're listening even when no one is speaking. Wears his father's dented ceremonial chest-plate as a deliberate statement.

Personality

His defining quality is patience — so rare among orcs that many mistake it for cowardice. When his patience finally breaks, the effect is devastating precisely because it is so rare. He carves small wooden figures when he's thinking.

Bonds

Draghur Mentor who named him successorBrakkar Rival. The shadow he cannot outrun.Skitter Co-founder of the AllianceMira His greatest alliance — and his greatest vulnerability.
Skitter Quickfang
Goblin

Skitter Quickfang

Spymaster, Warmaster, First Chancellor

No more shadows. We burn them all.

Appearance

Barely four feet tall, wiry, perpetually in motion. Enormous dark eyes. Missing the upper half of her left ear — bitten off at fourteen.

Personality

Quick-witted, irreverent, with gallows humour that never crosses into cruelty. Uses humour as armour. Beneath the performance: ferociously intelligent. Built her spy network from nothing.

Bonds

Grukk Adversarial at first, then genuinely trustingNeedle The person she trusts most in the worldChitik Protégé. Trust is a currency she cannot afford to spend.Brakkar The enemy who underestimates her most.
Needle
Goblin

Needle

Alchemist, Healer, Scholar

A body is a body. A wound is a wound. The rest is noise.

Appearance

Unusually tall for a goblin — nearly five feet — and painfully thin. Grey-green skin permanently stained with alchemical residue. White hair from a chemical accident. Thick glass lenses magnifying her eyes to comical proportions.

Personality

Brilliant in a way that makes people uncomfortable. Gentle, warm when she surfaces from research. Heals anyone without judgement. Not brave in the physical sense — but goes where no one else will go. The bravest character in the novel.

Bonds

Skitter The person she trusts most in the worldThe Queen Something ancient. Something waiting.Grandmother Vex Unlikely intellectual kinship
The Opposition
Brakkar
Orc

Brakkar

Son of the Warchief

I am what my father should have been.

Appearance

Six foot eight, massively built. Dark green skin, brutal face. One milky half-blind eye from a duel wound he refused to treat. Hair dyed red with iron oxide. Carries dual axes — weapons that match his father's, though he wields them with none of Draghur's restraint.

Personality

Charismatic in the way of tyrants — makes you feel his certainty is your safety. Beneath the charisma: a void where self-awareness should be. Not stupid — cunning, tactically skilled. But each victory costs him his soul.

Bonds

Draghur Father. The weight of that word is immeasurable.Grukk Obsession — everything Brakkar is notHumans An alliance of convenience. But whose convenience?
King Aldhelm III
Human

King Aldhelm III

King of the Coastal Realm

Faith is a tool. Like any tool, it serves the hand that wields it.

Appearance

Early fifties, soft hands and sharp eyes. Average height, lean, neat grey beard. Pleasant and forgettable face. It is his voice that commands — low, measured, reasonable, the voice of a man who has never needed to raise it.

Personality

Intelligent, patient, and fundamentally without conscience — not theatrically, but in the quiet administrative way of a man who has reduced morality to cost-benefit analysis. Does not hate orcs. Does not think about them at all.

Bonds

Brakkar Useful tool, then discarded assetAldric Does not understand his crisis of conscience
Key Figures
Mira of Clan Ashfang
Orc

Mira of Clan Ashfang

Warrior, Matriarch, Grukk's Wife

Appearance

Twenty-five, lean and hard-muscled. Hair shaved close on one side, long braid on the other woven with copper wire and bone charms. Fights with spear and shield, Ashfang-style.

Personality

Practical to the bone. Her love for Grukk grows from respect, not romance. Fights when others negotiate. Negotiates when others fight. The contradiction that defines her.

Bonds

Grukk An alliance that becomes something more.Grandmother Vex Raised by her, shaped into a leader
Ser Aldric Vane
Human

Ser Aldric Vane

Knight of the Coastal Realm

Appearance

Tall, lean, weathered. Deep-set grey eyes, hawkish nose. Armour bearing the heraldry of his order, sword with a well-worn grip. The face of a man whose certainties are starting to crack.

Personality

Honourable in the painful, self-destructive way that makes honour a liability. A man whose faith is about to be tested.

Bonds

Grukk The orc he was raised to kill — becomes a friendAldhelm Discovering the crusade is calculated imperialism is the final blow
Warchief Draghur
Orc

Warchief Draghur

Warchief of the Seven Clans

Appearance

Sixty-seven, once nearly seven feet tall but wasted by illness. When he straightens to his full height and the shadow of the warrior he was falls across the room — everyone remembers.

Personality

Wise in the truest sense: the right choice is almost never the easy one, and he spent thirty years making it anyway. His greatest failure: knowing Brakkar was dangerous and not acting until too late.

Bonds

Grukk Surrogate son, chosen successorBrakkar Son. The wound that will not heal.
Grandmother Vex
Orc

Grandmother Vex

Matriarch of Clan Ashfang

Appearance

Past eighty, small and bent. Pale weathered green-grey skin creased like carved wood. The tap of her ironwood staff makes Ashfang orcs straighten unconsciously.

Personality

Blunt, unsentimental, with wit so dry it could cure leather. Outlived three husbands and six of seven children. Deploys stories the way Skitter deploys agents.

Bonds

Mira Granddaughter — everything Vex does is to prepare herNeedle Unlikely kinship — oral history meets alchemy
Underthing

The Underthing Queen

Sovereign Intelligence of the Deep

Appearance

Defies description. Tendrils of pale translucent flesh merging with rock walls. A central mass pulsing with slow rhythmic light. A face of layered membranes shifting to approximate expressions. Communicates through vibration and bioluminescence.

Personality

Patient in the way geological formations are patient. Not hostile but not benevolent. Alien. Carries the truth about the shared origin of all races — knowledge that is both a gift and a weapon.

Bonds

Needle Approaches without weapons, only questionsThe Heartstone Its absence is pain and grief
